Children’s bones, ligaments, and tendons undergo rapid growth during growth spurts and can be more susceptible to injury and pain during these times. It is good practice to pay attention to how your developing child walks, runs, and moves to notice problems with their feet. We encourage all your parents to have a podiatrist assess any concerns about pediatric foot care. Have your kids see a foot doctor regularly throughout childhood to catch and correct problems as they arise and to prevent unnecessary complications. Here at West Hartford Podiatry Associates, we pride ourselves in offering the best Pediatric Foot care for your child.
Common foot and ankle problems experienced by children usually include one or more of the following:
Sprained and strained ankles: This is one of the most common injuries in children and adults. Ankle sprains in children heal more quickly, but you should always have them treated promptly and properly by your foot doctor to avoid future complications or missed diagnoses, like fractures.
Achilles tendon problems / Heel Pain: The insertion point where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel is often the site of tendonitis/apophysitis (Sever’s Disease) in children. Heel pain in children often responds well to rest and cold therapy, but if heel pain persists all your foot doctor.
Toe and foot fractures: Acute breaks and stress fractures are more common in kids since their bones are still developing and haven’t reached full strength.
Children often outgrow foot and ankle issues, but to ensure things progress normally, see your podiatrist for the proper diagnosis, advice, and treatment!

Are you tired of finding new ways to manage your pain? Surgery isn’t your only option. Shockwave therapy may be the solution you’re seeking for your foot and ankle injuries and pain. If you’re unfamiliar with this FDA-cleared therapy, we’re here to give you more details. Shockwave therapy is also known as Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy or EPAT. We recommend this option to our patients because it is safe, effective and has minimal down time.
The doctors at West Hartford Podiatry Associates consider and present their patients with all available treatment options. Surgery is the last resort as with it comes downtime and interruptions to day-to-day activities. Below is a brief explanation of the EPAT process:
-
Apply gel
The doctor applies gel to the treatment area, which could be your heel, your Achilles tendon or ankle ligaments. The gel helps to transmit the waves and increase the effectiveness of the therapy.
-
Release the waves
Applicator is used to releases the EPAT sound waves and is moved systematically, in a circular motion, about the targeted treatment area.
-
Begin the regenerating
As the waves are released through the applicator, the healing process begins. The waves cause increase in blood flow and gradually, damaged tissue begins to regenerate.
-
Back to business
On average, each session lasts 20-25 minutes. Time may vary with each patient. Once finished, there is no downtime. Patients can enjoy the benefits of a non-invasive procedure and return to normal activities.
EPAT or Shockwave Therapy is used around the world. This form of therapy can help reduce how much time it takes to recover and eliminates the complications that can come with traditional forms of surgery. If you are tired of managing your pain from conditions like ankle sprains, heel pain, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, and even shin splints, contact us today. Have you explored treatment options for your pain? The doctors at West Hartford Podiatry Associates offer a safe and effective treatment to help patients find relief from common conditions like Achilles tendonitis and heel pain. They are here to answer questions about EPAT, a fast and non-invasive solution. Schedule an appointment to see if this treatment is right for you.
What is EPAT?
Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy or EPAT is also known as shockwave therapy. The FDA has approved the treatment, and it is used all around the world. Patients can expect each treatment session to last about 15 minutes.
How does the treatment work?
First, the podiatrist will apply an ultrasound gel to the treatment area. Then, the treatment begins as pressure waves are applied to the skin. An applicator moves around the problem area in a circular motion. As the applicator delivers pressure waves to the skin, the goal is for the regeneration of new tissue.
How can shockwave therapy help?
Shockwave therapy or EPAT can help treat the following conditions, among others:
- Heel pain—Plantar fasciitis is a common form of heel pain. Patients feel the most discomfort first thing in the morning or after a time of seated rest.
- Achilles tendonitis—Inflammation or thickening of the Achilles tendon is the cause of pain for this condition. For more severe cases, a podiatrist may recommend surgery.
What are the benefits?
Patients most love how they can treat their pain without surgery. Since shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure, there’s no downtime. Resume day-to-day activities without waiting.
